Day at the Beach
Ocean Grove (aka OG and/or God’s Square Mile) is an eclectic beach town down on the New Jersey Shore. A good portion of that square mile is beachfront. Come rain or shine, people come to the beach to take a dip, surf the waves, run the boardwalk, or to just stare at the water. When I lived in OG, I engaged in each of these activities.
A boardwalk extends the length of Ocean Grove's beach. It signifies the boundary between land and sea. Once east of its border, people let go of their worlds as soon as their toes are buried in the sand and surrender to the rhythms of the ocean - if just for an hour, afternoon or day.
One summer, I chose to experience the beach from the boardwalk, using the long views to capture all of it’s wonder and candid moments without intrusion; to capture the waves rather than create them. Every time I walked it’s boards, the old adage - ‘a bad day at the beach is better than a good day anywhere else’ - was emphatically affirmed.
